About ltx-talk
ltx-talk was created by Joseph Wright to enable barrier-free presentations with LaTeX. The widely used Beamer class can unfortunately not be made tagging-aware.
While basic presentations already work fine with ltx-talk, there are some things missing, among them:
- Customizing header and footer is quite different from Beamer and almost not documented.
- There is no support for an appendix or a bibliography.
For customizing inner elements, you may use BeamerTheme-tcolorbox, that also supports ltx-talk, despite its name.
Appendix and Bibliography
Perhaps the team behind ltx-talk does not regard these elements as usefulk - for me they are.
An appendix gives the chance to provide additional material that might come up in the discussion after a presentation, e.g. You can easily add a starred section named appendix; as the outline is only visible in the PDF reader sidepanel, that will do no harm.
A bibliography will not be used during a presentation and I agree with Joseph Wright that the best place for a bibliography is in the handout, but you can hardly avoid that a presentation gets digitally distributed without related additional material, and so any references mentioned in the presentation should also be resolved there. Of course, the bibliography should go into an appendix. What is crucially missing is an equivalent to Beamer's option allowframebreaks to spread the bibliography over several slides.
Adding a Logo to the Slides
I found two solutions, the first on StackExchange (unfortunately I could not locate it again, so I can't provide a link).
This simply adds an output hook and stamps the logo on any page. It works, but I don't like it. I feeld the logo should be part of the footline (or headline or whatever element you prefer). It goes like this:
\newsavebox\logobox
\savebox\logobox{%
% adjust height according to your needs
\includegraphics[artifact,height=6mm,alt={logo of the organisation}]%
{logofilename}%
}
\AddToHook{shipout/foreground}{%
% adjust dimensions according to your needs
\put(\paperwidth-\wd\logobox-10mm, -8.5mm){\usebox\logobox}%
}
The second solution integrates the logo into the footer. I must admit I like it more. I found it in a GitHub issue, authored by Ulrike Fischer. It looks like this:
%%%% this part is indentical to the previous solution
\newsavebox\logobox
\savebox\logobox{%
% adjust height according to your needs
\includegraphics[artifact,height=6mm,alt={logo of the organisation}]%
{logofilename}%
}
%%%% and here is where the fun starts
\DeclareInstance {footer-element} {logo} {talk} {}
%%% add the following line only if it is necessary
\makeatletter
\newcommand\@logo{%
\usebox\logobox
}
% now you can use your logo
\EditInstance{footer}{std}{
separator = \hfill,
element-order = {title, logo},
right-hspace = 3mm,
left-hspace = 3mm,
}
%%% add the following line only if you had to say \makeatletter before
\makeatother
Using the Section Name
With a longish presentation, showing the section name inside the footer may be heplful. It would be more helpful if this would also build a navigation (like in Beamer), but alas.
Title and subtitle are usable with ltx-talk out of the box. It took me some time to figure out where section names are, olden ideas like firstmark do not work.
% see above for \makeatletter
\DeclareInstance{footer-element}{mysection}{talk}{}
\newcommand\@mysection{%
\UseName{l__talk_section_tl}%
}
% the subsection name is stored in l__talk_subsection_tl
% before using it you will perhaps write some code
% to supress it if it is not defined.
% And you use it in the obvious way
\EditInstance{footer}{std}{
element-order = {title, mysection, logo},
}
